TRAVEL PACKING LIST: summer & winter

It might surprise you but I mostly travel light. If my trip is up to 10 days long I’ll always opt for a carry on luggage and a small purse and yes, I’ll still have a different outfit for every day. I have been asked from Zalando to share my secret! They also have different guides on packing that you can check here in case you are more curious.

I am a big ‘lists’ person. I love making lists and I truly believe a world would be a better place if everyone would appreciate them more! One of my many lists, I have been using since years now, is my Travel Packing List. Actually, I have two of them, one for summer and the other for winter travelling.

But, before we start I would like to put emphasis on the type of luggage you carry with you. Don’t be scared to invest into good quality luggage, some examples you can find here, otherwise you will shop for a new suitcase every two years! Also, go for distinctive luggage that you will immediately know it’s yours (this will speed time greatly at baggage pick up).

Now, back to filling that fabulous suitcase of yours. When packing you want to make the listing based on the ‘importance’ of things in your luggage. Always ask wether you will need something a lot or just once. Get rid of ‘just once’ things right now, you will probably not use them at all.

Here is my list I have been using since years now and below you can read why and how some of the items happened to find themselves up here. Great news: the list is printable!

TRAVEL PACKING LIST

Let’s start with the essentials:

  • passport + boarding pass (if printed beforehand)
  • wallet: money (you want to make sure you withdraw at least some cash before travelling, and you want to make sure you have it with you) + credit card(s) (make sure they will work abroad!) + an old ID you can use instead of your passport when needed (going out for example)
  • cell phone + charger + headphones
  • notebook + charger (only if you’ll use it!)
  • camera + charger
  • ebook reader + charger OR a book (or any other entertainment to fill possible long waiting hours)
  • documents (have you printed out your itinerary? travel insurance? any other important documents to not forget?)
  • medicine (in case you take any on a daily basis, contraception pills for example?)
  • small hand sanitizer

The essentials I always keep in my (relatively small) purse as these you always want to have on you in any time and you don’t want to open your luggage in order to have to search for them.

The list then continues with toiletries and here you have to remember that you have carry on luggage and you’re only allowed to pack 100mL liquids:

  • toothbrush + small toothpaste
  • face cream + hand cream (I have this one in my purse) + sunscream
  • deodorant + parfume
  • contacts + contacts solution (small packaging)
  • make up (don’t go berserk and pack the essentials you use on a daily base plus one ‘going out’ make up kit, not more than 2 lipsticks, I always go with light rose for daily looks and intensive red for day/night) + tweezer
  • make up cleansing wipes (not liquid so you can carry as many as you want and can use them for multiple purpose, sometimes I like to carry them in my purse if the flight will be a long one)
  • hair brush + hair accessorise + straightening or curling iron (think how many times you will use them?) + small hair drier (only if you are informed that there won’t be one where you are going to)
  • nail clipper + one neutral nail polish + nail polish removing pads
  • shower gel + razor + body lotion + hair shampoo + conditioner (if you are traveling for more than 4 days opt for simply buying these once at your destination)
  • tampons (only if you know you will need them)
  • band aids (just pack a couple in your wallet)

The things noted in bold have been proven to be very useful to me during all my trips, some explanations might sounds silly but trust me, it’s good to be reminded of them as we all tend to forget something sometimes. For example, before one of my trips I have prepared all the money I would need in local currency and then I have left it at home because I have changed wallets and forgot to put the money in the other wallet… You never want to leave your home without a nail clipper, especially when you don’t tolerate too long nails like I don’t.

The last part of my list is mostly dedicated to clothing and here is where my lists splits into summer and winter versions. In general, when packing clothes think about how many daily and how many night outfits you need, plan your outfits and pack exactly what you plan to wear plus an extra outfit for day and night (in case you don’t feel like wearing exactly that). Try to pack clothes you can reuse in both occasions and you can mix and match. For an ‘insta-worthy’ trip always plan your outfits according to your trip location and pack at least one or two signature pieces. Before packing take out the clothes you want to pack in your suitcase and re-think your clothing strategy, if you are not sure about a certain piece forget about it!

winter travel packing list

  • underwear: panties (how many you need exactly + 2 more), bra(s) (think of what you are wearing and what kind of bar you need), socks (days you are traveling + 2 more pairs) + pantaloons (in winter I don’t go out without these!) + undershirt (also don’t go anywhere without this one in winter). Here I have some tips for you. I have a very useful underwear sorting thingy where you have two bags, one for ‘wear’ and the other for ‘wash’, love it!
  • sleepwear (that special one if you are travelling with your boyfriend)
  • clothes: coat (this one you will probably we wearing all the time so make sure it goes with all your combinations), winter sweater (wear one and pack only one as they take a lot of space), pants, skirts, t-shirts, dresses … as mentioned above, don’t pack too much!
  • shoes: nice & comfy boots/ shoes for daily look, one pair of heeled shoes/boots for night (sometimes I combine these two necessities into the same pair of shoes so I just bring two heeled pairs)
  • accessorise: ‘party purse’ (one small purse for a night out) + jewellery (pack only things you will wear, keep it in the ‘party purse’)
  • sunglasses + regular glasses (if you need them)
  • gloves + scarfs + hats (make sure to wear a combination when traveling where you can wear a hat already)
  • umbrella + rain coat (in case you are going to a windy location)
  • plan to do sports: sneakers, sports clothes, extra socks, towel.
  • ski holidays: ski pants, ski jacket, beanie, thermo t-shirt, extra fat socks, equipment (boots, helmet, skiis or board, sticks)
